5 tips for growing figs in pots in Thailand
For our 50–80 cm saplings, on a balcony, in a garden or by a condo window.
Pick a heat-hardy variety
Not all figs love heat. BTM6 (Japan) and White Israel are tried and tested by Everyday Fresh Figs in Thai weather.
Keep the roots airy
Figs hate wet feet. Use a light mix of coconut husk, leaf mould, perlite and aged manure. A small 8–10 inch pot puts the plant's energy into fruit, not roots.
6–8 hours of direct sun
In a condo, choose the spot with the best morning light, or add a grow light.
Pinch the tip
Want a short plant with more fruit? Pinch off the soft tip after 5–7 leaves. This stops it growing taller and encourages fruit along the branches.
Water well, never waterlog
Water daily, but never let the pot sit in water. Use a balanced fertiliser while it grows, then switch to a high-potassium one for sweeter fruit.
